How To (Actually) Get A Good Night’s Sleep
*Owning a business is fun, games, and freakin’ draining and exhausting — and that’s right about when people start telling you that you can “sleep when you’re dead. “
Okay sure, but what help does that offer to fight that every-day fatigue we all experience?! Now, I’m not a doctor, buuuuut I have it on *decent* authority that a sweet, good night’s sleep will not only increase your energy but also reduce stress, improve your mood, help you think more clearly and improve your mental sharpness. SLEEP = MAGIC, and I’ve got a fewwww spells up my sleeve that will keep you feeling rested + ready for what lies ahead on that entrepreneur’s schedule.
My top tips for a better sleep:
1. Stick to a sleep schedule
Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day (yes, EVEN on weekends *eye roll emoji*), trains your body to develop healthy sleep patterns and find its natural rhythm (lol, I don’t know what that means either, but I’m super certain it’s real). Over time, this training will help you fall asleep faster and stay sleeping through the night. What. A. Dream.
2. Digital curfew
Real talk time. How many of you lie in bed mindlessly scrolling through Instagram? I am SO guilty of this. But much to my late-night-lurking chagrin, the screens on our digital devices give off an artificial blue light that suppresses the release of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, making it more difficult to fall and stay asleep. As a test, start putting your phone to bed early. Ideally, you should set your digital curfew 2-3 hours before bedtime — but howww about you set the curfew one hour prior to bedtime and see how it goes. Baby steps, right?
3. Start a bedtime routine
Whether it’s a hot bath or shower, meditation, reading, journaling, listening to music or a podcast, there are countless ways to spend your pre-sleep time that will help you let go of the day’s stresses. Allocating time for your body and brain to wind down is SO important. And, even I’ll admit, it kinda sounds nicer than falling into an Instagram hole right before catching them Zs.
4. Create your ideal sleeping environment
The basics: a dark, cozy room is ideal for getting a good night’s sleep. No shock there. But DID YOU KNOW (and the stylist in me loooves this one!) that having a clean and clutter-free bedroom will help keep your mind calm so you can slide into a deep, deep sleep?! Staging for the WIN! I also love using a silk sleep mask to keep the light out, because the darkness helps to release melatonin.
Last, and most important, having a cozy and comfortable bed is key. Sleeping in our new king sized bed with our new White Terry organic sheets is an actual dream (like a dream-dream, the kind you remember and aren’t creeped out by)! There is absolutely nothing better than crawling into a bed with organic sheets *Mmmm*. You can read all about the benefits of organic sheets here.
